Carbonate Mineral Dissolution and Its Carbon Sink Effect in Chinese Loess

چکیده
The relationship between the source and sink of atmospheric CO2 has always been a widely discussed issue in global climate change research. Recent studies revealed that chemical weathering carbonate rocks contributed to 1/3 (~0.5 Pg C/yr) missing carbon sinks (MCS) globally, there are still 2/3 MCS need be explored. As one main overburdened parts earth, loess is important driving factors for consumption. Here, we elaborated on dissolution process effect from silicate minerals loess. source/sink elucidated, mechanism formation secondary carbonates clarified. Additionally, commonly used methods identification primary summarized, study influencing also revealed. Based research results progress interpretations, prospects provide scientific basis further sinks.

Abiotic carbonate dissolution traps carbon in a semiarid desert.
It is generally considered that desert ecosystems release CO2 to the atmosphere, but recent studies in drylands have shown that the soil can absorb CO2 abiotically. However, the mechanisms and exact location of abiotic carbon absorption remain unclear. Here, we used soil sterilization, (13)CO2 addition, and detection methods to trace (13)C in the soil of the Mu Us Desert, northern China. After ...
متن کاملEnhancing serpentine dissolution kinetics for mineral carbon dioxide sequestration
Mineral carbon dioxide sequestration binds carbon dioxide by reacting it with magnesium silicate minerals to form solid magnesium carbonates that are ready for disposal. Research onmineral sequestration has focused on enhancing process kinetics in aqueous processing schemes. High costs of these processes are associatedwithmineral processing, such as ultrafine grinding, or the consumption of aci...
متن کاملCalcium Carbonate Dissolution Rate in Limestone Contactors
The project summarized here investigated some of the parameters and relationships used to predict the performance of limestone contactors. The purpose of the project was to study the effect of limestone composition, especially the dolomite [CaMg(CO 3) 2 ] and impurity content of the stone, on the kinetics of carbonate mineral dissolution and to determine the effect of temperature on the rate of...
متن کاملThermodynamic Simulation of Carbonate Cements-Water-Carbon Dioxide Equilibrium in Sandstone for Prediction of Precipitation/Dissolution of Carbonate Cements
Carbonate cements, such as calcite, dolomite, ferrocalcite and ankerite, play important roles in the formation of pores in sandstones: precipitation of carbonate cements modifies pores and inhibits compaction, while dissolution creates secondary pores. This work proposed a precipitation-dissolution model for carbonate cements-CO2-H2O system by means of ion equilibrium concentration ([M2+], M = ...
متن کاملComparing the Effect of Naturally Restored Forest and Grassland on Carbon Sequestration and Its Vertical Distribution in the Chinese Loess Plateau
Vegetation restoration has been conducted in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) since the 1950s, and large areas of farmland have been converted to forest and grassland, which largely results in SOC change. However, there has been little comparative research on SOC sequestration and distribution between secondary forest and restored grassland. Therefore, we selected typical secondary forest (SF-1 ...
